Entertainment
This year we have an exciting mix of events and activities to keep you entertained throughout the evening.
Hosted By:
Max Keeping, C.M. has been a Patron of Child Haven for many years. (C.M. means “Member of the Order of Canada” - see, he’s wearing his pin.) He is a news anchor, producer and writer for CTV News Ottawa, and a helper of many children’s causes.
Student Volunteers
Once again this year Evening Fest will be made possible by the dedicated contributions of our student volunteers from Elmwood High school. Without their commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm Evening Fest could not continue to raise awareness and funds in support of Child Haven International. This group of bright young women bring a youthful flare to the evenings festivities and are a symbol of pride for the school they represent. We look forward to working with Elmwood again this year to ensure the success of Evening Fest.
Evening Performances:
Galitcha
Joining us this year is Galitcha! Galitcha is a visionary ensemble that performs original compositions based on Indian folk music, combined with influences from jazz, world and North American folk. The band has played live performances in such unique places as the Festival au Désert in Timbouctou, Mali and Festival de Rabat and International Festival de Tetouan in Morrocco. It is their live performances that have earned the group some of its most enthusiastic acclaim. Coleman Barkin of New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts called their show there "an evening of love," adding "Galitcha is that rare blending of superb musicianship and emotional connection ." Paul Emile Comeau of Penguin Eggs, named Galitcha one of the top 10 live acts of 2003.
Success Lion Dance Troupe
The Success Lion Dance Troupe has been performing in the Ottawa-Carleton region for over 15 years. During that time, the group has performed at a number of local festivals and events. Success Lion Dance is a feast for the eyes and ears as the group brings an ancient Chinese tradition to life. The Chinese Lion Dance is a 3000-year-old Chinese tradition that symbolizes prosperity, luck and happiness. According to legend, the dance tells about a creature that terrorized villagers with thunder, lightning and rain. However, the aftermath was an excellent harvest for the villages. Subsequently, the dance is performed in every festivity with the thundering sounds of drums, cymbals and gongs.
Capital Klemzer Trio
The Klemzer Trio's will be playing music drawn from Yiddish and Hebrew sources as well as from contemporary medlys and swing..
Henna Artists
The team of Ottawa henna ladies, led by Sameena Khan, are talented artists who have performed henna art along with educational presentations about henna and care for henna designs at EveningFest for 5 years! Back by popular demand, these are talented and multilingual artists who are sure to apply on a design to inspire!
At Evening Fest this year, be sure to try on a henna design! The natural henna is applied free-hand to make a temporary tattoo. For centuries, henna has been used to decorate the body for celebrations with designs full of scrolls, swirls, paisley outlines and dots.
The henna tree, Lawsonia inermis, grows in hot, arid regions like North Africa and India. The pigment, lawsone, temporarily stains the skin. Lawsone is a tannin; tannins are also found in wine and tea and infuse porous surfaces with a darker pigment, and do not chemically alter the surface permanently. The design will last about 4-5 days..
See what beautiful creations they can come up with for you!
Tarot Card readers
Guy Savard, with his own style for reading regular playing cards, and Henry Marcotte with his flare for Tarot card reading, are sure to capture your curiosity. With over 50 years of combined experience, let them answer your most pressing questions and find out what the future has in store for you.
They are predicting an evening of pure enjoyment on Oct 17th.
